EOFY is the most competitive fundraising window of the year. Every organisation is asking supporters to give at the same time, inboxes are crowded and paid media costs typically increase as charities compete for attention.

Because of this, many organisations lean heavily on urgency messaging. Countdown emails, last chance appeals and strong emotional creative often become the centre of the strategy.

Urgency can certainly drive donations in EOFY fundraising, but on its own it is rarely enough.

The strongest EOFY campaigns are not built in June. They are the result of months of preparation, audience building and data driven decision making. A performance driven approach focuses on creating demand earlier in the year and then converting that demand when EOFY arrives.

The following framework outlines practical ways organisations can strengthen their EOFY fundraising performance.

Build your audience early

The size and quality of your audience will directly influence EOFY results. Organisations that rely only on their existing email list often hit a ceiling on growth.

From January onwards, marketing activity should focus on expanding first party data and growing audiences that can be retargeted later. This may include paid social campaigns designed to attract new supporters, content that drives email sign ups or petition participation, and lead magnets such as reports, impact stories or supporter updates.

The goal during this stage is not immediate donations. It is to build a larger pool of people who already know and trust your organisation by the time EOFY arrives.

Segment your supporters

Not all supporters behave in the same way, and treating every contact identically during EOFY can limit effectiveness.

By analysing behaviour earlier in the year, organisations can begin segmenting audiences based on signals such as previous donation history, engagement with emails or content, frequency of website visits and interaction with specific campaigns or causes.

These insights allow messaging to become far more relevant. A repeat donor may respond better to impact updates and upgrade opportunities, while a first time supporter may need stronger storytelling and proof of impact before donating.

Segmentation also helps prioritise the audiences most likely to convert during EOFY.

Test messaging before EOFY

EOFY is not the time to experiment with completely new creative.

Earlier campaigns throughout the year provide valuable opportunities to test which messages resonate most with supporters. Organisations can experiment with different impact stories, variations in calls to action, emotional versus informational messaging and different creative formats such as video or imagery.

The insights gathered from these tests should inform the messaging used during EOFY appeals. By the time June arrives, organisations should already have a clear understanding of which themes generate the strongest engagement and response.

Prepare your conversion journey

Once supporters decide to donate, the process should be as simple as possible. Even small friction points can reduce conversion rates.

Before EOFY begins, organisations should review the entire donation journey, including the clarity of landing pages, mobile optimisation of donation forms, the number of fields required to complete a donation and the structure of suggested donation amounts.

A clear and seamless journey helps ensure that interest turns into completed donations.

Track the metrics that matter

Many EOFY campaigns are evaluated using surface level metrics such as email open rates or social engagement. While these provide some insight, they do not reflect overall fundraising performance.

A performance driven approach focuses on metrics such as cost per donor acquisition, average donation value, return on ad spend, repeat donation rate and assisted conversions across channels.

Attribution is also important. A donor may first discover your organisation through social media, read multiple stories on your website, join your email list and only donate weeks later after receiving a reminder email. Multi touch reporting provides a more accurate view of how different channels contribute to donations.

Final thought

A performance driven EOFY strategy is not defined by louder messaging or last minute urgency. It is built on the work that happens throughout the year.

When organisations invest in audience growth, test and refine their messaging and track performance across the full supporter journey, EOFY becomes far more predictable. Urgency still plays a role, but it supports a strategy that has already created demand.

The result is stronger fundraising performance and a more sustainable foundation for the year ahead.
